I BM, you BM, we all BM for IBM!

Remember last week when I said I had some exciting news on the horizon? Well, here it is:

Well here it is: It looks like I'll be working for IBM again!

After my promotion with IBM's BCRS (Business Continuity and Resiliency Services) evaporated with the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy and being shuffled into a dead-end career with IBM's Delivery Compliance department -- then into the dole queue for almost two years, IBM's bringing me back in as a BRM (Business Recovery Manager), which is basically is a high-level Duty Manager (A Duty Manager is commonly a term used within the service industry. Usually a member of the management team, though increasingly someone employed to solely a Duty Manager or Manager on Duty is the first point of contact in the absent of a senior manager. For example, in a hotel in the absence of the General Manager, the Duty Manager will be in control of the hotel. In charge of ensuring all brand standards, policies and procedures set out by the company or General Manager are being executed.)

As with my last IBM position, this is also "work from home", which means that I will be able to travel as I used to and can do my job anywhere in the world there's an internet connection.

So, I'm looking forward to being able to seriously travel once again, without fear of where my next meal might be coming from. Woo Hoo! As my new position will be "very visible" to the customer and involves scores of high availability (production) servers, so there will undoubtedly be a lot of strange hours (late nights, weekends, holidays, etc.) and possibly business travel.

My IBM laptop arrived today, which is pretty much the sign that this is official.

... and now for the rest of the story:

It seems that when it rains, it pours. While waiting for IBM to complete the paperwork the past two weeks, three other job offers have come in -- one of which I will be going in for a second interview next week.

So... I might work either job (or both jobs for a while), it all depends on who has better pay and benefits. IBM has shown they have no concern for my well being, so it's bitter-sweet going back to them. The other position (which is an I/T management position) could be better for my career -- but, sadly, it's M-F onsite position, not remote/WFH.

We'll see which one wins shortly!

Other than that, I don't know where we'll bump into one another.

God -- I haven't been to Detroit (other than to change planes) since this event in 1989.

I heard they are tearing major sections of Detroit down? Is that true?

not to my knowledge, but I would be surprise for communities for upgrading the communities. shrugs. Also Mi just passes the non smoking law in bars, so it's interesting how it's going to affect the eagle and diamond jims.

it would be great to have you here for a little bit!

What about the Interchain and Double R?

i believe the Interchanged turned into the eagle.

The R and R is still around, but in a rough part of town, and very loud.

R&R was always in a rough area, but it was fun.

Oh, I should mention that the calendar graphic (above) is dynamic, which means that it will change every time I revise my calendar.

If you come back to this post in 2021, that calendar will appear (provided, I'm still around!)

Okay, I'll play devil's advocate; you used to love that fact you could travel anywhere, at any time, and do your job too. You were everywhere, all the time and you only had the house as a base.

Now here you are in NYC, with KK, and a nice apartment, etc., etc., but have been still traveling wherever you've wanted to go.

Now, you honestly see yourself going into the office from Monday - Friday.....week after week after week after week??? *imagine the wheel in the cage going around and around and around*

Just my two cents worth for you to ponder.

Sweet! Keeping my fingers crossed for you either way. ;)

Yes, although it was only about 14 hours. ;-)

My host was very nice -- and speaks Spanish and German fluently (he's originally from Barcelona!)

He made White Asparagus (which was in season when I was there) and we went for a stroll in the downtown.

Nice time, although far too short, again...

Congratulations! I hope that whichever job you take, you enjoy it. Hopefully when HWMBO and I are in the US (maybe) later this year we can get together. Our best to you both!
